Alec Baldwin says that “everyone” who was on the set of Rust knows “exactly who to blame” for the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.

The actor also offered an explanation of how the gun that killed the cinematographer in October last year in New Mexico could have been fired without him pulling the trigger.

This comes after a recent FBI report stated that the gun’s trigger needed to be pulled in order for it to discharge.

Speaking to US journalist Chris Cuomo on his podcast, Baldwin discussed the ongoing coverage of the event and said the slow progress of the investigation was “problematic”.

“I know that every person on the movie set knows what happened, and the people who are talking the loudest about what happened or speculating about what happened weren’t on the movie set,” he said.

Naming US media outlets including the LA Times and The Hollywood Reporter, he added: “They’ve been talking nonstop about what if this and if that and they’ve had dinner over it and what they have in common is no one has been there. .

“Everyone who was there knows exactly what happened. They know exactly whose fault it is.”

Of the investigation, he added: “The fact that it took so long was quite problematic for me.”

According to the FBI report, the support weapon “could not be made to fire without pulling the trigger,” but Baldwin has always denied that he ever did.

Baldwin said a bullet can be fired without pulling the trigger through a process called “ventilation.”

“It didn’t come from me, it came from the prosecution itself,” he told Cuomo.

“If you pull the hammer back and don’t lock the hammer; if you pull the hammer back – in old western movies, you would see someone swing the hammer from the gun.

“The hammer did not lock. You pulled back to the point where the bullet fired without you pulling the trigger, without you locking the hammer.”

The actor reiterated that the top security officer on the set “declared the gun was safe when he handed him” the gun.

A report into the incident previously found that the film’s production company “knew that firearm safety procedures were not being followed on set” and “demonstrated pure indifference to employee safety.”

Rust Movie Productions was fined $136,793 (£104,810), the maximum allowed under state law in New Mexico, following a six-month investigation by the state’s environment department.

Baldwin continues to fight a series of lawsuits stemming from the incident.

“I am not the victim here. Things for me will get better, things for me will clear up. I’m 1000% confident about it,” he said.

“And nothing is going to bring that woman back. She died.”
