Watch: The sun goes down on the first day of Glastonbury 2022

Glastonbury Festival goers should pack their raincoats and expect a rainy weekend.

Rain is expected to arrive at the festival on Friday afternoon before easing into the evening.

However, despite the lull in the rain overnight, there is a risk of heavy rain on Saturday and some showers on Sunday afternoon.

The Met Office said some showers could also affect British Daylight Saving Time at Hyde Park on Friday, Saturday and Sunday – although the Met Office said they were “light” and “low risk”.

Temperatures are expected to remain warm, staying in the high 20s through the weekend across the UK.

Tens of thousands of revelers enjoyed a sunny start to the festival as they arrived at the Worthy Farm site in Somerset on Wednesday.

However, the brief period of sunshine has now come to an end, with rain and possibly thunderstorms expected from Thursday.

Senior Met Office meteorologist Rachel Ayers said Friday will bring rain in the north and northeast of England and southeast Scotland, some of which could be heavy with the chance of local storms.

There will also be some moderate rain in the central and southern parts of England in the afternoon with some periods of sunshine, especially in Scotland and the east of England.

Ayres said: “A swath of rain will pass through Northern Ireland, Wales and southwest England in the afternoon, hitting Glastonbury in mid-afternoon, bringing cooler and breezier conditions.

“The downpours will subside on Friday night and the streak of rain will continue in the northeast, bringing some heavy rain squalls at times.”

On Saturday, the range of rain will decrease, but the showers will start to the west and southwest.

Ayres said some “may be locally heavy with risk of local storms, especially in the southwest, so risk of heavy rains for Glastonbury.”

Glastonbury is celebrating its belated 50th anniversary after the COVID pandemic forced organizers to cancel the 2020 and 2021 events.

Many ticket holders will likely struggle to get there, as the festival coincides with the biggest rail strike in a generation.

This year’s lineup includes Sir Paul McCartney, Diana Ross, Billie Eilish and rapper Kendrick Lamar.
