There were mixed reactions to the news on social media, with some moviegoers speculating that while the first Clown was heavily influenced by Martin Scorsese Cabby, a musical accompaniment would likely pay homage to Scorsese New York, New York starring Liza Minelli.
Eric Diaz tweeted: “All the toxic brothers loved Joker because he fetishized Scorsese’s ‘Taxi Driver’, a (great) movie they love for the wrong reasons. a musical with Gaga riffing on Liza. Their hate will be STRONG.”
Reis Flores said: “Todd Phillips Joker was Taxi Driver here’s another Martin Scorsese movie with Liza Minnelli that Lady Gaga loves. NEW YORK NEW YORK this is #Joker2.”
While some are skeptical about Gaga’s choice – who was nominated for an Oscar for the 2018 film a star is born – others believe the unusual move is the perfect accompaniment to the first Clown movie.
Noam Blum published: “Joker 2 being a musical with Gaga as Harley Quinn looks amazing. If you’re going to do a sequel to this movie, lean into being weird and your own thing.”
Cooper’s Hood tweeted: “Lady Gaga playing Harley Quinn has a chance to be amazing. And the musical aspect shows just how different Joker 2 will be. It should be interesting to see how the rest of this movie fits together.”
Sheraz Farooqi said: “While speculating the title of JOKER: Folie à deux, many have taken on Harley Quinn to co-star with Joaquin Phoenix. Lady Gaga is an interesting choice for Harley, but the most experimental thing is the idea of a musical. It’s risky, but this might work. Interested to hear more.”
Meanwhile, many Lady Gaga fans have admitted that they weren’t fans of the first film, but would watch a sequel if she stars.
Margot Robbie currently plays Harley Quinn in the DC Comic Universe, starring as the villain in Suicide squad and spin-off Birds of prey.
