Next’s first indoor tanning line includes mousses, oils and more to produce the perfect bronzed glow

Includes tanning products, applicators, and even self-tanning rubber spray to fix setbacks (The Independent)

Depending on who you ask, alongside sunscreen, after-sun, hats and sunglasses, a fake tan is one of the most important summer essentials. And with benefits that include glowing skin, improved muscle definition, blurring scars and boosted confidence – all without the risk of UV exposure – it’s easy to see why.

There are a number of brands out there, from St Tropez and St Moritz to Bondi Sands and Isle of Paradise – the latter being the tan of choice for Ryan Gosling, you know. But while all of these brands have charming names from much sunnier climes, it can often be overwhelming knowing which one to choose.

Unless you’re an avid self-tanner – in which case you’re probably as loyal to a brand as a football fan is to his team – you might be looking for the perfect product to start your tanning journey. And we think we may have found it in a very unlikely place.

Despite offering a range of well-established tanning brands including Hawaiian Tropic, Sienna X and Garnier, street giant Next has just entered the self-tanning ring. It is offering a selection of products including a gradual tanning lotion, tanning mousse, glowing body oil and all the extras you need to keep your tan longer and looking natural under the name NX Glow.

So, in true IndyBest style, we tested it out to see how this newcomer really looked compared to our old favorites. Read on below to find out which products are definitely strong contenders.

how we test

At first, there seem to be a few products in the NX Glow range, but once you factor in the various shades, it actually narrows the list down to just two tanning products, three applicators, a body oil, tanning eraser, exfoliating glove, exfoliation. body lotion. This creates a pretty straightforward reach that is easy to understand.

Using each product as instructed on the label, our tester prepped the skin with the body scrub and exfoliating glove, tested the two tans in every shade by applying with the glove, brush and applicator on the back, and moisturized the skin with the body lotion. intermittently throughout the process. The remover was used to clean up any mistakes – even the best of us can get caught in the tricky parts – and the shiny oil gave that extra oomph when you went out on the town.

Ease of application, color, aroma and result were all taken into account, and some products certainly performed better than others. For reference, our tester is very pale, of English/Irish descent, and has been self-tanning regularly for about ten years, so they definitely have a good amount of tan tests under their belt. NX Glow extra dark self-tanning mousse

Evaluation: 09/10

Available in light/mid (£14, Next.co.uk), dark (£14, Next.co.uk) and extra dark shades, our tester jumped on the lighter shade first. When it comes to self-tanning, we always recommend opting for a lighter shade first – especially if it’s your first time – and then build up as desired. Remember, the goal is post-holiday glow, not looking like a different person.

The first thing to note is the smell, as it’s easily one of the best tans we’ve found with an apricot scent. Second, even though it is a mousse, there is no need to shake the product to make foam, it comes off easily every time. And thirdly, it’s incredibly silky, which means it’s quite luxurious to wear the glove on, and the color of the guide shows you exactly which areas have been covered to prevent stain loss. The result for all shades after eight hours overnight was a natural, streak-free color that lasted for about a week.

The light/mid and dark tones were not dark enough for our tester. Even though they’d taken the shine off Edward Cullen, he was spending more of a day in the garden than two weeks in the Caribbean. That’s why extra dark became our tester’s favorite choice in the end, a surprising result as they’ve never gone from a dark shade to any other tan, so remember it’s on the lighter side.

NX Glow Coconut Body Scrub

Evaluation: 7.5/10

To achieve the perfect tan, preparation is key. Always exfoliate one to two days before application to ensure that the dead skin has been removed so you don’t end up with uneven fading or cracked desert-looking skin.

With a scent of coconut and coffee, this is another product that made us smell like a truffle hunting pig in the shower. Massaged into wet skin, quartz powder and perlite worked to buff gently, while jojoba seed oil added a layer of nourishment. It’s on the stickier, soap-like side so definitely needs a thorough rinse afterwards, and while it did a great job on larger areas like the belly, legs, and chest, we skipped it with a rougher exfoliating glove for drier areas, like like the feet and elbows.

Next self-tanning sheet protector

Evaluation: 10/10

We’ve already looked in depth at TikTok’s famous self-tanning sheet protector, but included as part of the tanning line, we had to give it another go – and again, we were pleased. Easy to put on, it saved our white sheets and pillows during this month of tan testing and is sure to do the same for many months (if not years) to come.

To echo our fellow tester, we also think it made the tan develop into a deeper color, likely thanks to it staying on our bodies rather than the sheets. And of course, it can be used with any tanning product, not just the NX Glow range.

NX Glow Coconut Body Butter

Evaluation: 8.5/10

Moisturizing your skin in the days after self-tanning can extend its longevity by a few days. This body butter is incredibly thick and looks like a real treat to apply every night thanks to its aroma, creamy texture and moisturizing effect. Coconut oil and shea butter provide nourishment and hydration, while the scent is similar to that of a body scrub, giving it a coconut frappuccino scent that we found much stronger. Just note that since it’s so thick, it takes a good five minutes or so to fully absorb, so wait before trying to drag the jeans down your damp thighs.

If you’re looking for a quick and easy purchase for your entire tanning routine, the ultimate NX Glow tanning kit includes this body butter, body scrub, tanning glove, and tanning mouse, and you’ll save money compared to buying it separately too. (£26, Next.co.uk).

NX Glow tinted body glow oil

Evaluation: 09/10

tones: Three

Available in shades of bronze, rose gold, and champagne gold (our favorite), this body glow oil added an extra kick to the glow that was perfect for date nights, summer nights, or as a little pick me up on skin tones. gray of days. Acting as a body illuminator, tiny shimmery flecks are massaged into the legs, arms and décolleté for a more radiant finish, but in a very subtle way – you won’t look like a trinket, we promise.

Again, it’s incredibly fragrant with a sweet scent that can also be used in place of perfume, for those people who come closer. Coconut oil and vitamin E work to hydrate and nourish the skin, which means it’s not just about aesthetics. And interestingly, this is the only product in the range in a glass bottle instead of plastic, making it look incredibly luxurious on the bathroom shelf too.

NX Glow self-tanning rubber spray

Evaluation: 6/10

Even seasoned tanners make mistakes every now and then, whether it’s forgetting to moisturize your knees, elbows and feet first, or not washing your hands afterwards – so a good tanning rubber is always handy to have in your closet. For small, weak bugs, this one works wonders. Simply spray on dry skin at least three days after tanning, wait about five minutes, and rinse.

For bigger bugs, you’ll need to take off the exfoliating glove, as while this helps a little, it’s not hard enough to banish big bugs. Glycolic acid and lactic acid work as the main ingredients to eat away dead skin, while coconut oil, vitamin E and aloe leaf juice nourish at the same time. While it feels smooth when switched on, it’s always best to do a little patch test beforehand to check for any reaction, just in case.

NX Glow body brush

Evaluation: 09/10

To reduce the risk of bright orange or white fingers, using a body brush is a great trick to ensure even coverage over those tricky parts. Long and narrow, this NX Glow brush quickly covers hands and feet in seconds and is even angled to reach smaller cervix too. The bristles are incredibly soft, so we also use them on our face on occasion, making sure to wash the brush well between uses with soap and water. You can even use this to apply body oil to your legs, arms, and chest as well.

The verdict: NX Glow fake tan range

Next’s first indoor tanning line has definitely piqued our testers’ interest, it’s not every day that a giant retailer enters new territory. But with fake tan a booming business, it’s easy to see why Next might want a piece of the pie.

Overall, the line offers an even, sun-kissed glow that will get you in that holiday mood, and all at an affordable price. Personally, we think the NX Glow self-tanning mousse is a great first tan for beginners – it’s easy to apply, smudge-free, and with a smooth color that doesn’t highlight any flaws. For more experienced tanners after a deeper tan, don’t be afraid to jump into darker shades – it looks like a daunting step, but it’s certainly not as dark as you might think.

And we will also add NX Glow Colored Glow Oil, Coconut Body Butter and Body Brush to our bathroom cabinets too. So we took off our hats for Next to this one, showing all of us that it’s never too late to try something new.
