Want to know what to watch? It’s a bountiful release week on streaming services, with a huge number of modern classics, recent hits, and new original releases all arriving simultaneously – you’ve got plenty of options.
Amidst the modern classics is the underrated Down With Love, a delicious pastiche of a Rock Hudson sex comedy starring Ewan McGregor and Renee Zellweger, truly acting as hilarious parodies of classic character types, charming from start to finish.
Speaking of parody, Ridley Scott Gucci house, coming to Prime Video, often sounds like the wide range of ‘Italian’ accents on display from its star-studded cast. In the new release end of things, Ninja Thyberg’s Pleasure attempts at a frank and unbiased examination of the porn industry, impressive in its portrayal of performance porn as just another job, with all the frustrations and exploration, camaraderie and fun that can come from any other job.

Cooper Raiff’s Soft Royal Cha Cha it reaches that comfortable zone of heartfelt Sundance drama and, for the most part, it does. All in all, lots of offers.

down with love (2003) – Disney+ (Choice of the week)
Although perhaps best known these days for his work on the Ant Man movies (secretly among the best on the Marvel movie conveyor belt) Peyton Reed’s down with love is his masterpiece: a wild and incredibly funny pastiche of Rock Hudson and Doris Day sex comedies.
Playing with aesthetics and mocking the attitudes of the time, her characters are either absurd and despicable journalists who arrive at the film dangling from a helicopter, or a feminist author who has to appeal to a room full of old men in gray suits who refer only by your initials. The aforementioned journalist is the chauvinist, ‘woman’s man, man’s man, city man’ Catcher Block, a playboy played by Ewan McGregor, stylized here to vaguely resemble Rock Hudson.

Your Enemy: Rising star and feminist author Barbara Novak (Renée Zellweger) on the release of her book Down With Love, a book that proclaims that women should end love entirely for the sake of a career and instead enjoy “free sex”. la carte” with no strings attached or the need to be tied down: in short, the same pleasures that men of the time enjoyed.
The book becomes a hit, and Novak ruins Block in the process. In retaliation, he plans to date Novak to prove she’s a hypocrite in a direct homage to the movie Pillow Talk, posing as an innocent and humble southern astronaut, ‘Major Zip Martin’. Like Block, McGregor is perhaps the funniest and most charming he’s ever been, and Zellweger rises to match, both fully indulging in the rhythms of their wacky comedy dialogue. The loud and fun performances have production design to match, a colorful collage of grand 60s pastel deco tones and an assortment of wild costume hats, even a musical number at the film’s conclusion.
The film can be accused of having its cake and eating it at points, as it hides several wild twists under its ornate sleeves, gleefully revealing Block’s crass and ridiculous plot before leading to an even more absurd rug pulling, but the The film’s self-awareness, and the excellent performances by everyone involved – including an amazing Sarah Paulson and an always fantastic David Hyde Pearce playing completely to type – make it work.

Pleasure (2021) – MUBI
Consciously seeking to overcome the taboo taboo in its representation of the contemporary adult film industry, Ninja Thyberg Pleasure employs its various textures and camera techniques in its study of the technical and logistical aspects of pornography.
He has the same problems that every other profession has – classism in the workplace and racism among them – but his own unique joys as well, and Thyberg’s film seeks to sensitively explore this overlap. It’s for mixed degrees of success, but mostly for the better.

In a film mostly populated by real adult actors and directors, Thyberg’s use of the docu-drama style can sometimes make the more dramatic embellishments seem louder, but for the most part it avoids the cliché by portraying the motivations of the various women in the film. newcomer Bella Cherry. played by newcomer Sofia Kappel).
A young Swedish girl has moved to Los Angeles to try to become a porn star, Linnéa’s identity crisis begins to mix with her exploration of different niches in the industry, as work invades her personal life and vice versa. Thyberg’s grasp of the material becomes a bit slippery in this regard in the later stages of the film, as the personal drama begins to feel over-the-top and at odds with the film’s previous focus.
Still, the director’s willingness to showcase porn’s platonic ideals, as well as the bad, is also evident, in her studied depiction of intimate, professional, and gently managed BDSM footage, almost immediately contrasted with the film’s more gruesome sequence, which shows how unsafe the same material can be in the wrong hands.
Because of the scarcity of American cinema around the contemporary porn industry, Pleasureand lies like a kind of island. So while it’s definitely unique in its mission to frankly portray, well, the pleasure business, it doesn’t always hit the mark, as some confusing dramatic twists begin to overshadow its purpose and throw away its more interesting elements for less guaranteed material.
Although imperfect, it is fascinating work and one that we hope will generate further exploration of an industry that remains peculiarly invisible from the perspective of American cinema.

Soft Royal Cha Cha (2022) – Apple TV+
Second hateful film from writer, director and actor Cooper Raid – first 2020 shit housenow Soft Royal Cha Cha – is enjoyable, though fairly unremarkable when considered against other Linklater-lite, Sundance dramas of its kind. Still, despite its title, it’s a kindly watched late-coming drama about young adult malaise, mistakes, and indecision (and a little romance).
A 22-year-old postgraduate with no direction, Andrew returns home disappointed – with his mother’s strict and brooding new partner Greg, with his job in fast food, with a college relationship rapidly cooling off into the distance. He quickly falls into the profession of party boy (which is where the title’s homage to the teen party’s millennial anthem o’Cha Cha Slide’ enters), increasing the bar mitzvah the same way a childhood crush did.

In the process, he meets Domino (Dakota Johnson), the young mother of Lola, an autistic teenager (played with wonderful naturalism by Vanessa Burghardt), and takes care of both of them, as he discovers himself throughout the film. quietly paced story.
Leslie Mann (playing Andrew’s mother) and Dakota Johnson and Vanessa Burghardt are fascinating in their depictions of their characters’ inner lives. So much so that, in combination with Raiff’s self-election in the lead role, it feels a little out of place, or at least distracts from the film’s real substance. For starters, through no fault of his own, he looks much, much older than 22.
Worse still in any of the moments when these characters remind you of their generosity, you can’t help but be a little conceited. This is tempered a little bit by how much is going on in these other performances, and in his character’s self-destructive, borderline alcoholism and self-centeredness that comes to a head in the last stretch of the film, and in how the film blends in with Andrew’s subjective perspective of events and people he doesn’t know or understand.
In short, more often sweetly than dishearteningly twee in their big statements about finding yourself (although there’s a lot of that too).

Gucci house (2021) – Prime Video
“Father Son House of Gucci,” Patrizia Reggiani’s wild caricature of Lady Gaga said with bravado in the main marketing hook of Ridley Scott’s latest biopic from the tabloids, Stranger Than Fiction.
Too bad the film didn’t deliver on such a dizzying pitch, proving mostly impassive in its execution, plus some of the more expansive performances by Italians this side of a Dolmio ad, much of it courtesy of the ever-exhibitive Jared Leto.

The rest, not so memorable, a Wikipedia page recital in numbers muffled in grayish digital tones and lacking the dramatic heft of Scott’s other 2021 drama The Last Duel.
