Much like the HBO hit War of Thronesprequel series dragon house will feature dream destinations that serve as a backdrop for the politicized and thrilling action scenes.

War of Thrones used a variety of locations to film throughout its eight seasons, including Malta, Iceland, Croatia and Northern Ireland, where the majority of the series was filmed.

Per dragon househowever, HBO moved to Warner Bros. Leavesden Studios in England for the interiors, with several exterior scenes shot in Cornwall, Devon and Surrey – alongside European destinations including Spain and Portugal.

The transfer of HBO production to England is seen by Visit Britain as a major boost to film tourism supply and visitor revenue. A British Film Institute (BFI) report states that in 2017, inbound tourists spent around £729.4 million on film-related screen tourism in the UK. This is estimated to have increased to £892.6 million in 2019.

The Great Britain Tourist Board also believes that film and TV locations highlight destinations across the country beyond the obvious hot spots and drive tourism along the shoulder seasons and across all nations and regions.

VisitBritain Vice President Patricia Yates said: “VisitBritain’s research shows that film and TV are powerful motivators for travel. With almost a third of potential UK visitors interested in visiting locations used in filming and seen on screen, film tourism has been an increasingly valuable part of our global tourism offering.”

Fans are clearly interested in visiting War of Thrones and dragon house movie locations according to Google Trends, War of Thrones Filming locations saw a 92% increase in interest in the last month. There are many destinations where you can hunt dragons this year in the UK and beyond.

From medieval fortresses to the rugged shores of Cornwall, here are some of the dragon house and War of Thrones movie locations in the UK and Europe where you can walk in the footsteps of the Targaryen dynasty.

With hidden coves, weather-beaten castles and stretches of golden sand, Cornwall was the obvious filming choice for dragon house. Fans have flooded social media with photos of the elaborate production setups and costumes that have been spotted at various locations on the popular peninsula.

Malcolm Bell, CEO of Visit Cornwall, says previous exposure to TV shows like poldark and Doctor Martin has proven to influence around 12% of visitors’ choices to visit Cornwall and has been the main driver of growth abroad.

He said: “The TV and film exposure in Cornwall was instrumental in raising the profile and standing of our beautiful region.

“Dragon House will expose Cornwall to a new demographic, and we are excited to see how this will further increase Cornish tourism from around the world.”

The cast and crew praised the Cornish locations used in the big-budget prequel with Eve Best, who plays Princess Rhaenys Velaryon, saying: You can’t believe this is on Earth, somewhere so extraordinary.”

Jagged Kynance Cove located on the west side of the Lizard was one of the filming locations used, along with the tidal island St Michael’s Mount. Photos have emerged of an arch erected on the island, showing the ‘House Velaryon’ symbol of a seahorse – could this be the location of Driftmark, Velaryon’s stronghold?

Holywell Beach near Newquay was also used for exterior scenes and can be seen in the trailers when Daemon Targaryen and adult Rhaenyra Targaryen can be seen standing in a huge expanse of golden sans.

Cáceres and Trujillo, Spain

Historic Cáceres has once again been transformed into Westeros, according to media reports and fan photos shared on social media.

One of Spain’s World Heritage Cities, it has extremely well-preserved square palaces and gargoyle towers that make it an ideal location for a fantasy epic.

Scenes from the seventh season of War of Thrones were also filmed in Cáceres as Lannister stronghold, Puerto Real. Filming locations during this season included Plaza de las Veletas, Arco de la Estrella, Plaza de Santa María, Cuesta de la Compañía.

According to the Spanish newspaper today, dragon house spent several weeks filming scenes in Cáceres and Trujillo. This medieval city is filled with Renaissance architecture and palaces and previously provided the walls of King’s Landing in War of Thrones.

Trujillo Castle also doubled as Casterly Rock, the ancestral stronghold of House Lannister.

Monsanto, Portugal

Picturesque Monsanto in Portugal is known as ‘the city of stone’ and has all the hallmarks of an epic fantasy city. Winding streets are carved into rock and granite houses are beautifully intertwined with giant boulders. Here, it’s all romantic cobblestone streets, ruins and Romanesque chapels surrounded by a unique rocky landscape.

Thanks to a Portuguese casting, we know that scenes from dragon house were filmed at Monsanto Castle. This medieval fortress could easily function as a Westerosi site, with its walled hillside courtyards and historic arched gates.

Fans hoping to visit this charming Portuguese dragon house local need to be aware that tourist supply is limited. Monsanto is one of the oldest cities in Portugal, so measures have been taken to preserve its distinctive heritage.

There are a few small hotels and restaurants if you want to spend the night following in the footsteps of your favorite characters.

surrey, england

Historic Surrey is home to the world-famous Magna Carta and is filled with rural charm and woodland.

According to Surrey Live, HBO filmed a tournament scene here at Caesar’s Camp, with reports of a large set set up on the spot in Aldershot. Warner Bros. trucks bearing the Targaryen seal were also seen here.

Castleton, Derbyshire, England

Some exteriors of the show were filmed in the Peak District in September 2021. The BBC reported that Matt Smith was seen in the quaint, historic village that is popular with hikers and has local caves that have been used in films, including the princess bride and The Other Boleyn Girl.

Peter Morris, owner of Castleton’s Bulls Head Hotel, which hosted several cast and crew members, told the BBC that filming took place in Cave Dale, Mam Tor and Eldon Hill Quarry.

dragon house airs on Sky Atlantic and the NOW streaming service starting August 22. The Iron Throne is touring the UK in August, visiting London, Cardiff and Edinburgh.
